Week 5 Games to Watch
Iredell Dragons vs Gorman Panthers
7:00 pm Saturday @ Iredell
Both of these teams have been slowly climbing in the rankings this season. Gorman is undefeated, but they haven’t faced a team of Iredell’s caliber. The Panthers are 11 point underdogs and will need to be on-point to win. After being shutout in week one by Jonesboro, the young Iredell squad has stepped up their game and earned three straight mercy rule wins.
Neither team will give up easily, so be ready for a long night- this one will go the distance.
Gorman HC Jeb Dixon
“Iredell has a good group of kids that have played together for a while. Most of them have been on varsity since they were Freshman. I have played them every year and they just get better and better. They are well coached and very athletic. Iredell is multiple on offense running both spread and tight. Defensively, they will give a variety of looks. We will have to play well and limit our mistakes.”
Iredell HC Luis Guereca
“We have a tough match up this week. We’ll be facing a solid team in Gorman. Coach Dixon is doing a good job over there and I know he is going to have them ready to play. We’re going to have to match their intensity, and play well, to give us an opportunity to win.”
Blackwell Hornets vs Moran Bulldogs
7:30 pm Friday @ Moran
This won’t be a marquee game, but it should be a barn-burner. Blackwell is undefeated, but lost to Moran last season. The Bulldogs have only lost one game this season- to #4 Bryson. These teams seem to be developing a rivalry, so both will go all-out to get the win.
Moran HC Lee Lewis
“They’re a very good team with lots of talent and Coach Lowery has done a great job with them.”
Blackwell DC Dale Means
“Moran is a really good team. They are big, quick and physical. It is a game that has been circled on our schedule since last year! We have been chomping at the bit for this one and I know they have too. It should be an old fashioned slobber knocker. We feel like they will by far be the best team we play before district.”
Fredericksburg Heritage Eagles vs Medina Bobcats
7:30 pm Friday @ Medina
Heritage is a mainstay in the private school side of Texas sixman. Many consider them a perennial powerhouse, and they are undefeated so far this season. The Eagles will enter this game an 11 point favorite.
Medina returned to sixman in 2014, and have done reasonably well. The Bobcats know Heritage has a great program- Medina is 0-3 against them. Medina will be looking to change that this year. This should be a fun game to watch.
Freddy Heritage HC Tim Shipman
“Coach Faglie and his staff have done a tremendous job of building Medina into a great six-man football program. You can by tell watching them play that they have some playoff experience veterans on the team. We look forward to very tough test on Friday night. We have been growing through our mistakes and need to take that next step. Friday night’s test against Medina will be an opportunity to do just that. We must play solid in every phase of the game if we want to come out of there with a win. It is games against this caliber of an opponent that prepare you for district and the playoffs.
I figure this will be a very tough, physical football game- one in which turnovers, penalties and small mistakes will dictate the outcome.”
Medina HC Josh Faglie
“We think very highly of Heritage. They are a solid team, and very well coached. They beat us last year, but our boys are much improved. We will have to tackle well in order win but our team is ready for the challenge. I can’t say enough about the way our kids show up ready to work everyday. They are the hardest playing kids I have ever coached. It has been a lot of fun these first few weeks, and we will be ready to play on Friday.”
Nazarene Christian vs Denton Calvary
7:30 pm Friday @ Denton Calvary
I hate to admit it, but I don’t know much about many of the private school teams- including these. But with an eight point spread, this game piques my interest. It should keep everyone there on the edge of their seats.
Nazarene HC Chris Connaughton
“We Pride ourselves on going out and finding tough competition that will prepare us for district, playoffs, and hopefully a State Championship. Denton Calvary is a historically tough program and this year is no exception. We have a lot of respect for them and look forward to a great game of football!”
Ropes Eagles vs Ira Bulldogs
7:30 pm Friday @ Ropes
Ropes has only won one of twelve meetings with Ira. They will be looking to make this game win number two in the series, but Ira isn’t going to make it easy. The 3-1 Bulldogs are continually getting better, and Coach Goodwin will have them ready for this one. Our system has Ropes as a nine point favorite, but any true sixman fan can tell you a game can shift by 20 points in a minute. PATs will be critical, and the team that doesn’t make them will likely lose.
Ira HC Toby Goodwin
“Ropes has an explosive offense and an aggressive defense. We must be mentally ready and execute extremely well.”
