Gorman Panthers vs Iredell Dragons
With a large homecoming crowd there to support them, the Iredell Dragons made short work of the
Gorman Panthers. The Dragons were only 11 point favorites, but made a mockery of our prediction with
a 64-18 mercy-rule win.
The Dragons made an early statement, and set the pace, by scoring eleven seconds into the game. With
just over two minutes left in the first quarter, Iredell had extended their lead to 24-0. Iredell’s offense
did just as well in the second quarter, and finished things off in the third. Head coach Luis Guereca had
this to say about the game “It was a big win for our team. With all the distractions of homecoming
week, the team was able to block that out and focus on the opportunity that was in front of us. It was a
great effort from top to bottom by our players and coaches.”
Gorman was scoreless in the first, but attempted to rally in the second. The Panthers managed to score
twice by halftime and made it into the endzone once more in the third. Unfortunately, they never found
a way to consistently break through the Dragons defense. When asked for a comment about his loss,
Panthers coach Jeb Dixon was short and to the point. “Iredell is a really good team that is well coached.
We had to many mistakes and they just flat out-played us tonight.”
The win moved Iredell to the #8 spot in the Sixmania Division II rankings- trading places with Calvert.
This brings a question to mind. Can the Dragons compete with teams like Richland Springs and Strawn?
I believe they can- IF they execute well and continue to play as a team. I look forward to seeing how far
they can go.
