Milford Plays Role Of David and Slays The Goliath Richland Springs – by Garrett Ross

Hamilton, Tx- All good things must come to an end and while Richland Springs has eight state championships the Milford Bulldogs ate them up Friday night. Milford was able to 45 the Coyotes for the first time since 2009 and delivered them their eighth loss in ten years.

Ta’ron Smith delivered the dagger for the Bulldogs, when he weaved his way through the  Richland Springs defense with 6:50 left in the third quarter.

The Coyotes had no answer for Smith, who was 13/16 passing for 200 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Ta’ron also carried the ball 6 times for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Richland Springs was able to tie the game up at 8 with 7:50 in the first quarter, but on their first possession of the game Milford forced the Coyotes to turn the ball over on downs.  During the second quarter the Coyotes closed the gap on the Milford lead 18-16 with 8:17 left before halftime.  The Milford defense wouldn’t allow Richland Springs to reach the end zone again.

Last season Milford was knocked out of the playoffs by Richland Springs in the area round 78-43, but Coach Ronny Crumpton put together a non-district schedule that prepared his team for redemption and it paid off.  The last time that Milford defeated Richland Springs was in 1996, 62-24, but the Coyotes were able to win the next five matchups against the Bulldogs.

So how impressive was this victory for Milford you may ask, Richland Springs has lost a total of 39 games in 24 seasons and the Coyotes have only lost 13 playoff games in that time period.  Milford joins the small list of teams that have 45’d Richland Springs over the past 24 seasons also, Mullin has done it twice in 1994 and 1995, Gordon has done it once in 1997, and Strawn did it twice in 1998 and 2009.

Milford will play Iredell next Friday 7:30pm at Bulldog Stadium in McGregor for the regional finals.  These teams have only met twice before splitting the series 1-1.  Iredell won the last game between these two squads 92-54 in 2001.
